"Houston, we have main engine ignition!"
One of my favorite movies is Apollo 13. It's one of the only movies I never get tired of seeing. I love the scene where the head of mission control is going down the list of critical functions leading up to the launch. As he calls out each function the attending engineer answers back "Go Flight" to give the all clear for their area of concern. Once they all answer in that same fashion, they're "Go for launch". Tonight is the first time in a long time I believe I can answer the question of where the market is heading with that same response. Everything the market did today tells me the decline is over for now and it's time to launch, even with the late day sell off. There are no guarantees of course, only probabilities. The rocket could blow up during takeoff, but it's unlikely. The final verdict was a 47% decline from the top. In 1929 it was 50%. That's close enough for government work. The ensuing rally in 1929 was a 50% retracement of the decline over 5 months. That same advance would take the S&P to about 1200. So that's the target. It would take a move below 840 for me to reconsider, however I wouldn't hold my breath. I doubt this market will be below 1000 for much longer. Expect some backing and filling but from higher levels. On this rebound we'll be watching for maximum bullishness to return with a vengeance. It'll be a journey with some potholes I'm sure, but tonight, all I have to say is "Go Flight".
